IMPORTANT: Halo and the shutdown of GameSpy (May 31, 2014)

It appears that GameSpy will be shutting down their support for Halo.

As posted on the GameSpy website, they plan to end support for the GameSpy Server Lobby on
May 31, 2014.

We'd like to address your concerns and we'll try to answer any questions you have. We will update this post with information as we get it.

Who is GameSpy?

PoweredByGameSpy.com is the company that provides the in-game server listings when you pick Multiplayer / Internet in Halo.

What is happening with GameSpy?

GameSpy was bought by another company (glu.com) awhile ago, and that new company is now planning to shut down support for all games that still use the GameSpy services (which includes Halo PC/CE).

GameSpy had previously stopped supporting some other games, including Halo Trial (the free demo version of Halo), but they were still supporting Halo PC and Halo CE.

Now we are facing the same problem that the Halo Trial community had to deal with last year.

How does this effect Halo?

Players who currently use the in-game server list would need to use some other method to connect to Halo servers (eg. Direct IP, or Xfire, or something similar). There may even be new alternative listing services to fill the gap.

But there is little doubt that the loss of GameSpy support will impact traffic to all servers. So it will probably make for an even smaller Halo community than we already have.

What are the other methods for connecting to Halo servers?

- Xfire Favorite Servers. You can add servers to your Xfire Favorites and then join them through Xfire.
- Direct IP. Each server has an IP address that you can use to connect to the server. Simply type the server IP:port into Halo.
- An alternate GameSpy-type service. Some members of the Halo PC/CE community are working to create an alternate service to restore the server Lobby. Development seems to be going well. Check back before May 31 because you'll need to update your Halo or install a fix to get it working. We will include detailed instructions when it becomes available.

Should we be worried?

We're telling you about this now so that you won't be surprised if/when the GameSpy server listing stops working in Halo. We hope that it will continue to operate until at least May 31, 2014 and by then we will have provided you with further information about how to continue to play on various servers.

Any updates?

YES!!! (as of May 15, 2014)

The alternate GameSpy-type service is ready! Bungie is releasing update 1.10 for Halo to use the new service. Further news will be posted HERE.
